This means a significant portion of products on shelves may be diluted, mislabeled, or outright fraudulent.
Knowing how to identify genuine, high-quality Manuka honey protects both your wallet and your health. Here's what to look for.
1. Check for a Recognised Grading System
Authentic Manuka honey will carry one of the established, independently verified grading marks:
- MGO Rating — States the exact Methylglyoxal concentration (e.g., MGO 263+). This should be backed by third-party lab testing.
- UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) — A comprehensive quality trademark issued by the UMF Honey Association (UMFHA) in New Zealand. UMF 10+ and above is considered therapeutically meaningful.
- MPI Certification — The New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has a scientific definition for genuine Manuka honey, and certified exporters must comply with it.
Be cautious of jars that simply say "Active Manuka Honey" without a specific, numbered rating from a recognised system.
2. Look for Country of Origin
True Manuka honey comes exclusively from New Zealand (and to a lesser, debated extent, some regions of Australia where related Leptospermum species grow). If a label is vague about origin, or claims to be from a country other than New Zealand, treat it with skepticism.
3. Verify the Lot Number and Certificate of Analysis
Every reputable Manuka honey producer should print a lot or batch number on the jar. Using this number, you should be able to visit the brand's website and find the corresponding Certificate of Analysis (CoA) — a document from an accredited independent laboratory confirming the MGO and other quality markers of that specific batch.
If a brand doesn't offer this level of transparency, consider it a red flag.
4. Understand What "Raw" and "Active" Mean (and Don't Mean)
Terms like "raw," "pure," "natural," and "active" are largely unregulated marketing language. They sound impressive but tell you nothing about the actual MGO concentration or authenticity of the product. Always prioritize the numerical MGO or UMF rating over these descriptors.
5. Packaging and Appearance
While not a definitive test, genuine Manuka honey has certain characteristics:
- It is typically thick and creamy, not runny or watery.
- It has a distinctive earthy, slightly medicinal aroma — notably different from floral or clover honey.
- The colour ranges from light golden-brown to dark amber, depending on the harvest season and grade.
- High-quality packaging will clearly list: country of origin, MGO or UMF rating, net weight, and a batch/lot number.
6. Price as a Quality Signal
Genuine, high-MGO Manuka honey is expensive to produce. If you find a jar claiming MGO 500+ at a price similar to supermarket clover honey, it almost certainly isn't what it claims to be. Authentic high-grade Manuka honey commands a premium price — and for good reason.
